The foundation for the UCSF Brain and Spinal Injury Center (BASIC) was established in 2002 as a clinical and basic science research center housed in the UCSF Department of Neurological Surgery on the campus of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). BASIC founders Drs. Geoffrey Manley, Claude Hemphill and Linda Noble recognized that proximity to the ZSFG multidisciplinary Neurotrauma Program was critical to enabling interaction and collaboration between basic scientists and clinician-reseachers. From modest beginnings with a total of 8 investigators, trainees and staff members housed in 1,300 quare feet, the Center now houses nearly 50 investigators, trainees and staff members in over 140,000 square feet of new laboratory, conference and office space to accommodate the expanding research programs.
